All homes require a certain amount of air exchange to keep the indoor air quality healthy and properly vent combustion appliances, like furnaces and gas stoves. Most homes, however, allow much more air than is necessary in and out through tiny leaks and cracks, which can be very difficult to locate.
Enter infrared thermal imaging and its superhero capability to identify places where air is leaking in and out of your home. Managing home heat loss is a big factor in improving your home's energy savings.
This detecting equipment shows the infrared range of light that indicates temperature differences, but is not visible to the naked eye. Infrared thermal imaging equipment provides a colorful image that shows hot and cool spots throughout your home. Lights, people and other sources of heat will show on the display in lighter colors, while cool objects will emit less infrared heat and show as darker hues, with a range of colors in between. The colors are added by the infrared camera so that the results can be easily understood.
When used in conjunction with a blower door test, an infrared camera can show where outside air is leaking in, deficient or missing insulation, leaky ductwork and more. The blower door test lowers the air pressure inside the house to increase the airflow through these small gaps. The difference in the outside and inside air temperature will display on the infrared image and provide a clear indication of where air sealing, insulation or other remedies must be completed.
Many of our customers can't believe how much they learn from a home performance audit. This new information can be particularly stunning when the infrared imaging camera shows just how much poor home airtightness is affecting their day-to-day comfort and annual energy savings. Our home energy audit team can use these tools to diagnose and fix the leakage problems that are costing you energy dollars every day.
